Winter is a time when we tend to shut the house up in an attempt to keep the heat in, however this can actually be bad for our health. With the windows closed for winter months we are trapping in all the bacteria and harmful contaminants. The EPA reports that pollution in your home can be 2-5 times higher than the outside air.
Here’s some helpful tips to keep your home healthy this winter.
- The best thing you can do is open windows for a few hours to allow fresh air to circulate into the home or at least twice a day for 5-10 mins, this will allow fresh air in without drastically cooling your home.
- Improve your home’s ventilation systems; maintain the furnace and check the relative indoor humidity. We don’t want it too dry or too damp. 45%-55% humidity is the optimum according to experts. Poor Indoor air quality can cause chapped lips, sinus infections, sore throats, flu, irritating flaky and itchy skin and colds.
- Vacuum regularly with a HEPA filter to remove as much dust from your home, especially if you have lots of carpeting (a dust mite favorite), washing your sheets at least once a week in hot water in order to kill contaminants, regular filter changes in your heating system, and bathe your pets once a week will help cut down on dander that is shed on to carpets and upholstery. Also general cleaning of all areas of your home on a regular basis will keep it free of harmful bacteria. A clean home is also good for the mind & the soul, it keeps you feeling fresh.
- Keep your home dry, fix any leaks as mould loves moisture. If you have nay major leaks have them professionally dried out as sometimes wall framing is left wet for too long and this will encourage mould growth. Mold is extremely bad for you but worse for Asthma sufferers especially.
- Regular professional cleaning of your soft furnishings such as carpet, curtains and upholstery is important and highly recommended to keep your home safe and healthy. It is recommended you have them cleaned every 12-18 months and more frequently if you have pets. Studies suggests that 200,000 bacteria could inhabit every 2.5 centimeters of your carpet…….that’s a Scary thought!
